When you own a golf cart, you're probably always tinkering with it, looking for new ways to make it even better. 1 common upgrade that many golf cart owners want to make is to increase the golf carts top speed. While you probably can't get your golf cart to go at really high speeds, you can generally take a few steps to boost its performance and help it go a little faster.

How Much Speed Can You Get?

Just like other types of vehicles, golf carts have a maximum speed limit cap that it is not safe to exceed. The golf carts designed to be used on golf courses can only hit speeds of around 15 miles an hour. Most golf cart manufacturers will recommend that you avoid pushing your golf cart any further past 25 miles an hour, as golf carts have a very high center of gravity and they simply aren't designed to be able to achieve higher speeds without tipping over or experiencing mechanical issues.

Gas Carts

If you're on a gas golf cart, you can adjust or even remove the governor in the golf cart. The governor is a small device which limits your golf cart to whatever speed was set by the factory. The governor works by preventing you from opening up the throttle past a certain point and also causes less air to enter your engine.

If you do not want to or don't feel like it would be safe to remove the governor, you can also get a new air filter for your golf cart’s engine, which can increase air intake. More air in your engine can help make it burn fuel more efficiently, thereby improving both its performance and its speed.

Electric Carts

Electric golf carts have a different system to cap their top speeds. You will either have to look into the Shunt system or the Series system, depending on which one is used on your particular make and model of golf cart. Look at your owner's manual to figure this out.

If you have a Shunt system, you should be able to easily program the speed parameters you want without making any other upgrades. If you have a Series system, you will probably have to upgrade many different parts, including the engine, cables, controller, solenoid, and the forward and reverse switch. It may be best to consult a professional when it comes to tinkering with this type of system.
